Originally formed as the Summerland Athletic Club, which encompassed both badminton and tennis, the Summerland Badminton Club came into being a scant five years after Summerland was incorporated, in 1911. To begin with, badminton was played in Ellison Hall, which stood where the Peach Orchard Park tennis courts now are.

In 1934, the present badminton hall was built, with volunteer labor, along with two wooden tennis courts in the adjoining property. In the 1960s, the land with the tennis courts was sold to the municipality, and tennis moved to Peach Orchard Park.

Since then, badminton has been played continuously at the hall, with varying numbers of members. At present there are about 60 members and growing.

In 2009 the Penticton Badminton Club, which folded some years ago, generously donated $70,000 to our Club to renovate the Hall. This was done, and the facility has a new outlook on life. We had a Grand Reopening in October 20009, and look forward to another 75 years of play.

The annual general meeting is held in October, at which time the Board of Directors is elected and everyone plays badminton. That's what it's all about, after all!

Katrina

Every year we have a Christmas potluck and mini-tournament, all of which is a lot of fun. The 2008 tournament was won by Pat Johnston and Catarina Kim, who were presented with flags of Canada and BC, donated by Right On Target Promotions of Summerland. Other prize winners were Lisa Kim and Linda Curle, who won bottles of fine wine generously donated by Thornhaven Estates Winery.

Regular badminton sessions are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon at 1pm and Wednesday evening at 7pm. Other playing times can easily be arranged by members with a key.
